Description of Work:
Ted M. Alemayhu is the founder and chairman of U.S. Doctors for Africa (USDFA), a non-profit organization dedicated to mobilizing volunteer doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals to fulfill the overwhelming medical manpower needs throughout the African continent. As an internationally respected humanitarian leader, Alemayhu envisions a future for Africa in which it produces and invests the economic wealth, intellectual capital and human resources required to provide medical care to its entire people.

With a background in business and accounting, Alemayhu's passion to 'give back' began at a young age while he was attending a prestigious Santa Barbara boarding school. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Alemayhu had witnessed first-hand the lack of medical manpower and resources throughout the African continent. As a direct result of these issues, millions of his fellow Africans are dying from preventable diseases. U.S. Doctors for Africa is a bridge that Alemayhu has built to bring American medical personnel to Africa to assist with the treatment of patients, as well as to train local medical caregivers.

Among numerous prestigious awards and recognition, Mr. Alemayhu is a recipient of the 2007 Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award. He is a frequently invited speaker throughout the United States and abroad in regards to the shortage of medical manpower in Africa. His work has been praised and recognized by African heads of state, members of U.S. Congress, U.S. senators, The World Bank, The IMF, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, former President Bill Clinton, NASDAQ, as well as numerous heads of corporations and foundations. USDFA addresses urgent local needs while working for the long-term creation of self-sustaining and self-directed public health systems continent-wide. The organization works in partnership with African governments, NGOs, and local medical institutions across the African continent.
