Cumar Cabdirashiid Cali Sharmaarke

Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke (Somali: Cumar Cabdirashiid Cali Sharmaarke, Arabic: عمر عبد الرشيد علي شرماركي‎) (born June 18, 1960) is a Somali diplomat and politician. He is the former Prime Minister of Somalia.

 

Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke is the son of former Somali president Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke who was assassinated in 1969 during a military rebellion in the country. The junior Sharmarke held various United Nations posts and attained his education in the United States. Speaking on the nomination of new PM, an official said that like his father, Omar Abdirashid will also be adored by the people of Somalia. There has been no effective central government in the country since 1991.

 

Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke is the son of Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke and Ruqia Dahir Ali Boss. His father was one of the former presidents of Somalia and he was assassinated in 1969.

His mother was the daughter of a well-known Somali Islamic scholar from the Mehri clan.

He studied at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he obtained degrees in political science and political economy. His family lives in Virginia in the United States. Sharmarke holds both Somali and Canadian citizenship.

He worked in diplomatic capacity for the United Nations in Sri Lanka and Sierra Leone and served as a political advisor in regards to the conflict in Darfur region in Sudan. Before becoming Prime Minister, Sharmarke was Somalia’s ambassador-designate to the United States.

 

Sharmake is the son of the former second President and first Prime Minister of Somalia, Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, who was assassinated in 1969,^[1] and Ruqia Dahir Ali Boss, the daughter of a well-known Somali Islamic scholar from the Meheri clan.
