Place of Origin: Nigeria

Apam Onyekachi, is a Nigerian football defender currently playing for and captain of French club side OGC Nice. His name, Onyekachi, means "Who is greater than (his/her) godly guarding?".

On December 31, 2007, Onyekachi was robbed and kidnapped in Enugu.

An extremely proficient centre-back who scores highly in the physical, mental and aerial ability departments, Apam rarely loses out in a one-on-one duel and knows how to stay on his feet rather than dive in for rash challenges. He was excellent at the 2008 African Cup of Nations, but he has not always had the recognition he deserves at international level.

Apam was a key member of the Nigerian side that finished as runner-up at the 2005 World Youth championships and gained a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. His French club Nice tried every trick in the book to prevent him going to the Games, yet he went anyway. He has been linked with moves to Ligue 1 heavyweights Marseille and Lyon and admits he has his heart set on a switch to the English Premier League. "My aim is to play for one of the top-five clubs in the world," he states. "To this end, a good World Cup is a must for me."
