This national park is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The wetlands habitat provides a home to more than 1.5 million birds, many of them migrating.  Pelicans, purple herons, African spoonbills, flamingos, aquatic warblers, and many rare species can be spotted.  Because of the outbreak of the invasive giant salvinia plant in 2000, it is now an area in great danger, and there are considerable efforts to save the habitat.
