All visitors to Tunisia must visit a hammam at some point. Admission is typically around $4, but can range to $30 depending on the location. These traditional, public bath houses offer a distinctly Tunisian spa experience.

Women and men are kept completely separate. Everyone lies in a steam-filled room for anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. After that period, people scrub each other with rough sponges in a rigorous manner. Many hammams have professionals on stand-by to help scrub and massage customers (give an appropriate tip if you receive this extra attention).
