Organization Details
ECOWAS is a regional group of fifteen countries, founded in 1975. Its mission is to promote economic integration in "all fields of economic activity, particularly industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, agriculture, natural resources, commerce, monetary and financial matters, social and cultural issues." Although it has revised its initial goal of complete economic integration, ECOWAS has expanded its mandate and now has specialized agencies dealing with health, women, and monetary policy, and member states have also contributed to peacekeeping missions and conflict resolution.
