MY BOOK OF CHRYMES

My Book of Chrymes is an autobiographical book which chronicles the abrasive experiences of independent recording artist and author, Freddy Will™, whose real name is Wilfred Kanu, Jr.  This book unearthed intense moments of his life that inspired lyrics which are intrinsically woven into his debut album, While I’m Still Young – The Talking Drums with solid music production.

It recaps a wild childhood in Liberia, West Africa where a narrow escape from the 1989 genocides in Kakata separated his family for years. With a glimpse of hope to someday reunite abroad, he endured uncanny hardships.  Now caught in a second civil war that knocked down the borders of Sierra Leone, it spread through the provinces where he roamed aimlessly.

His initial clashes with cultural shock brought new challenges as he toggled between school, adolescence, church and the streets. Freddy Will’s undying love for hip hop brought unavoidable persecutions and conflicts from guardians who squandered monthly staples sent by his parents for his care and that of his siblings.

Ultimately cast into the streets, he learned to hustle. He found solace in reggae playing ghetto slums where his involvement in music drew lifelong friendships that were nurtured from the most unexpected places. One day, his parents who were now living in New Jersey, USA made a radical intervention that spared him from the wrath of the latter vendettas of the genocidal civil war but not before exposing him to guns, drugs and violence.

Freddy Will’s refugee experiences that started in Sierra Leone and continued throughout places like the tropical paradise of The Gambia and Dakar, Senegal, ended with a long awaited reunion in New Jersey where racism would mimic tribalism. Turning to the streets of New Jersey taught him new lessons. Freddy Will wrote lyrics with a dream that seemed unattainable, until a chance encounter in Canada changed everything…
