Betafo is a rural community in central Madagascar. The descensants of the community are divided between that of nobles and slaves. Anthropologist Graeber arrived for fieldwork at the height of tensions between the two attributed to a disastous communual ordeal two years earlier. Graeber slowly uncovers the layers of historical, social, and cultural knowledge required to understand this event. He describes a view of power, inequality and the political role of narrative.
