This is the only park in Burundi located in a mountainous region and is one of the most popular ecotourism destinations in all of Africa.  It covers over 40,000 hectares and .  There are at least twenty well-marked hiking trails and three great campsites. 

The biodiversity is incredible, with many species that only thrive in high altitutdes.  There are at least 600 plant species recorded in the park, 90 species of mamals, and more than 200 species of birds.

Furthermore,  the country’s largest dam along the Congo-Nile Ridge is located in this park.  Thus, more than 50 percent of the country's hydroelectric energy is derived from this protected region.
