Lt. General Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa recieved his Bachelor's Degree from Makere University.

Nyamwasa's military career began when he joined the National Resistance Army rebel group under Yoweri Museveni in 1984.

He later joined the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and became an intergral part of the force that took over the Rwandan government following the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Nyamwasa played an important role in assisting Paul Kagame as he rose to power. Later, Nyamwasa headed the RPF military intelligence as the RPF became the governing party of Rwanda. He later served as Chief of Staff.

In 2001, as the Army was reshuffled, he was replaced as Chief of Staff by General James Kabarebe. In November 2002, he was re-deployed as Head of Security Services.

In 2004, Nyamwasa was appointed Rwanda's High Commissioner to India. He served there until February 2010.

Currently Nyamwasa resides in South Africa where he sought aslyum in June 2010 following several accussations including his involvement in grenade attacks in Kigali and an attempted coup d'etat.
