Sidya Touré

Guinea

Sidya Touré is a Guinean politician. He served as Prime Minister of Guinea from 1996-1999. He is currently the President of the Union of Republican Forces, an opposition party (UPF).

Sidya Touré  is a graduate of l'Ecole Nationale du Tresor de Paris. He began his political career in Cote d'Ivorie.

Starting as a Treasury Inspector in Côte d'Ivoire in 1972, Touré worked his way through the ranks and served in many government positions including serving as  Director of General Administration of Trade Minister of Côte d'Ivoire (1974-1977), Director of Internal Trade and Distribution(1977-1981), Director of Cabinet of Minister of Planning and Industry (1981-1993) and Director of Office of the Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire (1990-1993). He also served as the president of the SOFIG, the Industrial Finance Corporation of the Gulf from 1994-1996.

In 1996, he was appointed Prime Minister of Guinea by then President Lansana Conté, making him Guinea's first PM since 1984.  Touré's term as PM ended in 1999.  

In May 2000, Touré was appointed as president of the Union of Republican Forces.

Touré is a frontrunner in the 2010 Guinea presidential elections.
