Emerse Fae was born in Nantes, central midfielder Faé actually played for the French Under-17 and Under-21 sides, winning the 2001 FIFA Under-17 World Championship in Trinidad & Tobago in 2001.
However, following a change in the FIFA rules which allowed players over the age of 21 to switch national team allegiances as long as they had not played senior football, Faé decided to play for Côte d'Ivoire, the country from which his parents had emigrated to France.
He appeared at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, where he made his Elephants debut, and played in six out of 12 of his side's 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, though mostly off the bench.
After spending six seasons with hometown club Nantes, he moved to the English Premiership to join Reading in 2007, however after just one ill-fated season with the club he joined Nice back in France, having spent a period on loan their before signing a permanent deal.
