Chansa Kabwela was Editor for independent daily newspaper The Post. She was arrested after having sent Zambian vice president George Kunda, Archbishop of Lusaka, women's groups, and some members of the Zambian government pictures of a woman who, naked and not having enough money to afford health care, went into the labor(1). The child was born dead.
Not everyone felt sorry for Ms. Kabwela when she got arrested. Zambian President Rupiah Banda decried the pictures as "pornography" (2), while the chairwoman for the Nongovernmental Organizations Coordinating Council called said she was "shocked and disgusted" at the "gross violation of the woman's privacy." These charges come under fire from such groups as Committee to Protect Journalist (CPJ) and Sam Mujunda, the Editor-in-Chief at The Post, who called the pictures "particularly graphic" and accused the government of "ignoring the plight of the women" (NGOCC)(2). The Post has since apologized for the pictures, saying it acted in ignorance.
