Description of Work:
Nur Adde's introduction to Somalia's government was through the military. He began his career in the early 1950s as a member of the Italian colonial police force, before a promotion to the "Guardia Di Fianza," a special unit which protected tax revenues. Such experience allowed him to rise through the ranks to serve as deputy chairman to the 'Salvation Court,' a military court during the reign of Siad Barre which tried accused financial criminals (such as tax evaders). In 1991, as the state collapsed, Nur Adde became the head of the country's chapter of the Red Crescent Society, a position which many hoped would qualify him as the humanitarian and peacemaker Somalia needed when he reentered the governmental sector more than a decade later. In order to counterbalance the distrust many members of the Hawiye clan held toward President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, a member of the rival Darod group, the President nominated Nur Adde to replace Mohammed Gedi in November of 2007. Gedi, also a member of the Hawiye clan, had resigned a month earlier, largely due to disagreements with President Ahmed. The weeks prior to the Nur Ahmed's 2007 appointment as Prime Minister were said to be some of the worst of the lawlessness and violence Somalia had seen since it seen since the plunge into anarchy in 1991. The United Nations estimated "more than one million people - 10 percent of the population - has been displaced, including 60 percent of Mogadishu's residents." (source: Voice of America). Nur Adde still holds serves as the Red Crescent's chair. Both as chairman of the Red Crescent society and as Prime Minister, Nur Adde is said to have many accomplishments against so many obstacles, including professionalizing and creating a Red Crescent that is more efficient in its relief services. Politically, he has also received much praise, especially from foreigners. Because of his humanitarian background and his ability to navigate the tense anarchic climate of the Somali government with clean hands, Nur Adde is thought by many diplomats to be a leader who will work to stabilize the country.
