Description of Work:

Dr. Peter Sikana has dedicated 25 years of his medical career to providing health to women. He had his primary medical training in Zambia and specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the United Kingdom where he worked for 7 years (first 3 in a specialist training program). 

He worked in Zambia as a consultant and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Luanshya, Wusakili and Malcolm Watson Mine Hospitals in the Copper Belt from 1994-2001. Dr. Sikana was recruited to Sierra Leone in March 2002, as Specialist Obstetrician, Emergency Obstetric Care (EmONC) and LSS trainer. He is currently a reproductive health technical advisor. 

Dr. Sikana is an active member of the Global Campaign to end Obstetric Fistula. He has made substantial contributions to the UNFPA Knowledge Asset on Obstetric Fistula and Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care. He works closely with the College of Medicine and Applied Sciences in Freetown, as a part-time lecturer to undergraduate students in EmONC. Dr. Sikana coordinates the National Training of Nurse Anesthetists, a joint project supported by the MOHS, UNFPA and the EC aimed at increasing access to EmONC. He says he keep hoping things will change for the better, for a world that will care for its mothers and satisfy their reproductive health needs.
