An investigation of the unfortunate paradox that exists at the root of Gulf of Guinea politics. The government crisis that is rampants throughout the region state should discourage outsiders from capital intensive, longterm commercial investment which would cast doubt over the continuation of corrupt, politcal ruling cliques. However the presence of petroleum drastically changes the equation: the failure of the states affects the general population sparing the oil nexus. The states continue to survive regardless of their corruption and bad policies at the expense of the population.
