Aksum's stele fields hold some of Ethiopia's oldest, world renowned, standing monuments, a group of memorial obelisks.  They were erected between the third and fourth centuries.  These stelae are greater in scale thann those of the Gudit field.  Historians believe that this was a commemorative site, and burials are situated along largest stelae. The size and carving variations reflect social status and wealth of the deceased, and the tallest are thought to commemorate royalty.
