Kibera: Nairobi, Kenya — Bruce Hamilton

This is the outskirts of Kibera, one of Africa's largest slums, and the subject of the film "The Constant Gardener." Pictured here are shops lining one of the neighborhood's streets, with the open drainage system visible on the left. Railroad tracks separate Kibera from Jamhuri estate. The population here is thought to be roughly 1 million. Healthcare and schools are difficult to come by, as are basic services such as running water and electricity. Some estimates say that at least half of Nairobi's population is deprived of running water.
