Here is another view of Kigali. While the 1994 genocide is still what many people think of when they think of Rwanda, Kigali is a city that shows the world a very different picture - it is vibrant, serene, incredibly clean, friendly, rapidly developing and situated amidst spectacular scenery. The city does not deny or cover up the violence - it is home to the National Genocide Memorial, which is also a mass grave of roughly 250,000 people; there are memorials in the city and in the surrounding countryside; and newspapers discuss long-term effects of the genocide, the continuing efforts to bring perpetrators to justice and the work towards reconciliation. But while honoring and mourning victims, Kigali is working towards a peaceful future, seeking to move forward and strengthen the nation. It is an inspiring place to be.
